Govt Expected To Announce Sale Of Bord Gáis

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Energy, Martin Ferris TD has called on Minister Pat Rabbitte to comment on reports that the government will shortly announce the selling off of Bord Gáis of its retail gas and electricity sales section be sold off to private companies.

Deputy Ferris said: "Given that the Minister once described Bord Gáis as one of the ‘jewels in the crown' of the state sector, I am asking him to comment on the belief that this sell off has been approved by his Government.

"Such a move, apart from betraying decades of public investment and initiative by the company, will cost jobs and will inevitably lead to escalating energy costs for domestic and commercial consumers. It would also represent a complete betrayal of the Labour Party's traditional defence of public companies which once led to a Labour Minister, Frank Cluskey, to resign from Cabinet, ironically in relation to what was going on in Dublin Gas at the time."
