Meeting Held To Discuss Extensive Flooding

South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey has held a meeting with both the Minister of Finance, Sammy Wilson, and the Minister for Regional Development, Danny Kennedy, in relation to the extensive flooding which occurred in South Belfast last week.

Speaking following this meeting, the South Belfast MLA stated: "Following the extensive flooding which occurred in the constituency last week, I met with the Ministers this morning in order to address concerns which both constituents and myself have over the lack of preventative actions and total lack of accountability within those agencies with a responsibility in this issue.

"It was a very frank and forthright meeting. I pressed the point that to date not one single Departmental official has presented themselves to explain their failure to respond to the plight which businesses and householders found themselves in despite frequent warnings. It is all the more unacceptable given that some of the same areas had experienced the same type of flooding less than a few weeks previously.

"I have asked for a full report into all the incidents and a detailed analysis of what is actually causing recurrent flooding in localised areas.

"While there has been much discussion around the extensive infrastructural works and the cost, I believe that much of the localised flooding can be remedied much more quickly.

"I would urge the Minister for Regional Development to take immediate steps to prevent a recurrence of the nightmare which residents faced last week and to secure the necessary funding to complete the essential infrastructural works."
