Ulster Unionists Welcome Action Taken On Belfast Flooding

Ulster Unionist MLAs Michael McGimpsey and Michael Copeland have welcomed the Executive's announcement of a series of measures aimed at tackling the impact of flooding in some of the areas most affected following recent heavy rain, including South and East Belfast.

South Belfast MLA Michael McGimpsey said: "Whilst I welcome the funding to improve infrastructure to alleviate the situation at Sicily Park, it unfortunately falls far short of what is necessary and expected by local residents in south Belfast. I remain convinced that much more investment is required throughout the constituency to bring the infrastructure up to the required standard and I will continue to press the Executive to come up with the funds. The Executive really needs to come up to mark. Patch and mend simply will not do."

East Belfast MLA Michael Copeland said: "Residents in those parts of east Belfast affected by flooding along the Loop river will obviously welcome the upgrade for infrastructure there, but we really must look at other areas such as Connswater and Orangefield.

"I would also welcome the planned upgrade for the Flooding Incident Line call centre to ensure a greater volume of calls can be handled and would support any moves to improve the efficiency with which Government departments and public agencies react to flooding incidents. There is no question that a multi-agency response is required to tackle such occurrences and it is essential that the Water Service, the Rivers Agency, Local Councils and where appropriate DARD, sit down with local elected representatives to ensure that lessons are learned.

"Flooding has a devastating impact on people’s homes and businesses and as public representatives we must ensure that we do everything possible to prevent such incidents occurring."
