Glazed Canopy Unveiled At The Craft Village

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has visited Londonderry to undertake a number of engagements including the formal unveiling of the Glazed Canopy at the Craft Village.

This project, managed by the Inner City Trust, received £260,870 for the creation of a large glazed roof canopy to provide a 200m2 covered area within the Craft Village. The canopy has enclosed most of the existing square and has a projected capacity for over 200 people seated. The space offers a multi-purpose venue complete with power, heat, lighting and a sound system and will be able to operate all-year round, regardless of weather.

Minister McCausland said: "The investment which my Department has made in this canopy within the Craft Village has resulted in the area being available as an all-year round facility to allow an extended cultural calendar of events. This investment will benefit the city during the UK City of Culture 2013 and will leave a lasting legacy for both residents and visitors alike."

During his visit to the city, the Minister also took the opportunity to view progress on the Guildhall renovation and refurbishment works, visit a public realm scheme on Spencer Road and inspect properties in Union Hall Place and Spencer Road that have benefited from DSD ReStore funding. He also met with the owners of the former Ulster Bank building in Waterloo Place to hear about a £1.8m development project to upgrade and improve the external appearance of the building and to carry out works to improve the internal layout.

The Inner City Trust is just one of the local charities to benefit from the £10m secured by the Department for Social Development to fund the UK City of Culture 2013 infrastructure funding programme.
