Ballymun Regeneration Creates A Legacy

Minister for Housing and Planning, Jan O'Sullivan, TD, has stated that the successful regeneration of Ballymun creates a legacy that will be of benefit to communities throughout Ireland. Minister O'Sullivan was speaking after meeting today with the board of Ballymun Regeneration Ltd.

She said: "The transformation of Ballymun is a testament to the vision, dedication and perseverance of the local community. Working in close partnership with Ballymun Regeneration and Dublin City Council in particular they have brought about remarkable change.

"The physical regeneration of Ballymun is striking. New housing and state-of-the-art community facilities are fostering a community spirit that will continue to grow. As Minister for Housing I have approved a €51m budget for Ballymun Regeneration Ltd. up to 2014 that will see the completion of planned housing initiatives and a number of critical infrastructure projects.

"It will be the final significant cash transfer from my Department to Ballymun Regeneration, bringing total investment in the project, first announced by my colleague Brendan Howlin in 1997, to more than €700m.

"Off course the social and economic regeneration of Ballymun will continue even as the physical renewal phase comes to a close. Regeneration is about much more than just bricks and mortar and Ballymun Regeneration Ltd. has worked closely with the local community to build a thriving social fabric that ensures every person in Ballymun can play an active, positive part of the community."
