AIB Managers Probed
It has been revealed that AIB has launched investigations into two senior managers over their dealings in property businesses. Tommy Hopkins, a general manager with AIB commercial banking in AIB Bankcentre, Ballsbridge, Dublin, and John Hughes, Head of Business Banking, AIB Eyre Square, Galway, are involved in a number of property and other companies. Reports this morning suggest the two men are involved in business with third parties who have separate relationships with the AIB Bankcentre branch and AIB Eyre Square. Mr Hopkins is a 50% shareholder in Marchbury Properties Ltd, which built 222 houses in Balbriggan, Co Dublin, in the year to April 2007 and has other developments in train.
Irish Water Safety Issue Flood Advice
The Chief Executive of Irish Water Safety, John Leech, has today issued advice over the current floods ongoing in Ireland's west. Mr Leech said flood conditions exposed the public to hazards they need to be aware of. The Irish Water chief warned that fast moving flood waters can exert pressure of up to four times its speed against the legs of someone attempting to cross it. "Never put ones feet down if swept away in floodwater, because foot and body entrapments and pinning are the leading cause of accidental death in rivers." Motorists were also warned to be particularly vigilant to avoid flooded areas on roads but particularly near rivers. Mr Leech's warning said that with poor light and short days it is not possible to determine the depth of floods easily. "Swift water will carry cars and other vehicles away and there have been very tragic drownings in the past as a result of such accidents," he said. He has advised the public to take the following action should you encounter these heavy flood conditions.

Thierry Henry has said the Irish team "deserve" to be going to South Africa following their defeat at the hands of the French. Speaking today the Barcelona forward expressed his "embarrassment" at the manner of the French victory over the Irish in Wednesday's game in Paris. "Naturally I feel embarrassed at the way that we won and feel extremely sorry for the Irish who definitely deserve to be in South Africa," the French striker said. Henry went on to say that he believed a replay of the play-off game with the Republic of Ireland would "be the fairest solution". Henry's calls for a replay join those from the Irish Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, who said he would be speaking to Nicolas Sarkozy today about the matter.
