Irishman Dies After Hammer Attack In Australia

A Dublin man has died in an Australian hospital following a brutal hammer attack in 13 days ago.

27-year-old David Greene from Monaloe Park in Cabinteely, Co Dublin died last night in a hospital in Melbourne, following the attack nearly two weeks ago.

Murder squad detectives have taken charge of the investigation into the vicious attack on David and another Irish backpacker, 30-year-old David Byas, who was discharged from hospital earlier this week.

Mr Greene had been living in Australia for about two years prior to the attack and had been working at the Lynedoch Avenue backpacker’s hostel.

It is understood the two Irishmen were attending a house warming party at the hostel on Lynedoch Avenue, St Kilda, on August 26 when the attack happened about 1am.

Another housemate, Luke James Wentholt, 31, described as having an interest in kickboxing and martial arts, has been charged in connection with the attack.

Police have said they believe several eye witnesses are yet to come forward, and have appealed to them to speak to investigators.

It is believed that the assault happened when the two Irish men came to the aid of a distressed woman at a party being held at the hostel.

Police have said they expect to upgrade the charges against Luke James Wentholt to murder early next week.
